Gene(me)sis…

image

In the beginning, men watched the horizons,
and ploughed the earth.

And the earth was without form, and scattered with rocks;
and darkness was upon their face, and in their hearts, deep…
And the spirits of men moved upon the heart of the matter,
and men said, “Let there be gods”, and there were gods…
And men believed in their gods, and it felt good:
and the gods shadowed their minds,
and they became dark,
and darker.
And men called the light Grey,
and the darkness they called Nightmare.

And their evenings and their mornings were their resurrections
and graves…

And men said, let there be One,
permanent above our gods,
and let him divide our tribes from others.
And men made One permanent, who divided their tribes into those above
and others.
And it was so.
And men called the permanent’s home Heaven.

And their evenings and their mornings were their resurrections
and graves…

And men said, let the waters from under the Heaven be called Tears,
and let the mothers’ breast milk dry;
and it was so.
And men called their dried breasts Fate,
and the gathering of their tears called them War;
and men felt it was not good…

And men said, “The earth does not anymore, bring forth grass,
and herb yielding seed after its kind,
and the tree yielding fruit whose seed was in itself after its kind…”
And men saw, and it was not good.

And their evenings and their mornings were their resurrections and graves…

And men asked, “why are there lights under the Heaven,
to divide the Grey from the Nightmare?”
and they said, “for signs, and for reasons,
and for days, and tears,
and as lights to give light
upon our fights for the earth…”

And their evenings and their mornings were their resurrections
and graves…

And men saw the waters filled abundantly with the moving creatures that have life,
and fowl that flew above the earth in the open firmament of Heaven,
and the great whales, and every living creature that moves, which filled the waters abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after their kind: and men saw how good it was…
And men coveted them, rubbing their hands and saying,
“Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.”

And men saw the earth roamed by living creatures after their kind, cattle,
and creeping things, and beast of the earth after their kind: and it was good.
And men started to kill the beast of the earth after their kind, and the cattle after their kind,
and every thing that crept upon the earth after their kind:
and men saw that killing was good.

And men said, “Let us make killing machines in our image, after our likeness:
and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air,
and over the cattle, and over all the earth,
and over every creeping thing that crept upon the earth.”
So men created killing machines in their own image,
in the image of men created they them;
and drought and hail followed…

And men blessed them, and said unto them,
“Be fruitful, and multiply, and impoverish the earth, and subdue it:
and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air,
and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.”

And men said, “Behold, we have burnt away for you every herb bearing seed,
which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree,
in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed;
for you we have done it.”
And from every beast of the earth, and from every fowl of the air,
and from every thing that crept upon the earth, wherein there is life,
men took away every green herb for meat:
and it was so…

And men finally saw every thing that they have made,
and behold,
it was too late.

As their evenings and their mornings
have become their graves…

    1. Thank you Seeker!
As you’ve seen, the “Amen…” in the end is twisted with a “(nd)” insertion, which means, I don’t think there’s much hope, even though I hope I’m wrong:-)
      Take care:-)

  1. Very sad. I noticed the double meaning of your title which included both ‘nemesis’ and ‘me’, as well as ‘Genesis’. Sadness, destruction and despair are the consequences of putting ‘me’ first. Even though something inside man wants to have authority and dominion, another part seeks something higher to worship and to gain favor. It is my belief that unfortunately, instead of seeing ourselves as a distortion of the true likeness of our Creator because of the Fall, and instead of valuing one another, we distort His image and make Him more like us and then blame Him because things are ‘not good’ when it’s actually a result of our own egocentric thinking… (me).

I so appreciate your perspective, Rom. As I have said before, I learn a lot from you. Thank you.

    1. Hi Rene,
Thank you very much for your comment and good observation…

Nevertheless, there’s one reason alone which keeps me an agnostic, instead of being plain atheist, after nearly 20 years of ministry: the hope that one day, the one(s) unleashing all this upon mankind, shall come forth and acknowledge their own wrong instead of blaming us. Because who had the power to withheld from us the strength to withstand temptation, and still withheld it knowing in advance the results of allowing the Tempter to be present in his own garden, should have punished himself for doing so, not us…
There is absolutely no hint in the Torah, that the woman would have eaten of the forbidden tree, if not tempted…
The millions of innocent little children starving and eaten alive every day by flies while still hanging on their dead mothers’ breasts, can be hardly justified by any “original sin”, being certainly very far from any “love” of any “god”…
The one who said, “let the little children come to me”, should not expect agonizing children going anywhere; he should be going to them, because he could… I am ashamed for having believed the “higher purpose” theology, for nearly two decades…
I wish from the depth of my heart to do not have to write all the above… But honesty and the suffering of innocents leaves me with no other choice…
The memory of children like those in the picture posted with my “Moriah…” compels me…

Thank you Rene for your willingness to understand my side of suffering.

      1. Yes, the age old question of suffering. I don’t fully understand either, nor the other age old mystery of man’s free will and responsibility versus God’s sovereignty. But I do understand your side at least to some degree because I have and still do on occasion wrestle with it myself. ((hugs))

    1. Dear Heidi,
      Good to “see” you:-)
I used the generic term “men” all along, as a substitute for mankind. Nevertheless, now that you mentioned it, I’m glad I’ve done so… My heart is broken for what my wonderful wife had to go through for nearly two decades of our fundamentalist mentality…
I’m doing my best to make forgetting easier…
      I hope:-)
      Thank you for passing by:-)

      1. 🙂 Always pleased to pass by you!
Can it be argued that women are any better than men? Have women been given the same chance in this sense as men? I wonder.
Would women, had aeons gone another way and the world more-or-less became matriacrhical – or at least equal – would humanity have made the same mistakes, or is humanity, in whichever gender guise, just fundamentally flawed?!
Thanks for raising these questions (in me)!

      2. I wish (do I?) I could say something else than this: for as long as I have my family’s memories, together with stories of a much distant past, our family, all directions, have survived because the women did above and beyond has ever been credited to them! What I wrote about my wife is so much true, that without her silent (some exceptions though:-)) suffering and hard work, my life at this moment, with all its changes and new achievements and my absolutely amazing children, would be worth nothing.
Yes we are all flawed, but your wombs, your child nourishing breasts, and I could fill countless more pages, keeps this world spinning.
I am upholding this, even if I must stand alone:-)

  3. Rom, I can only hope we see before it is too late and that our evenings and mornings may become the celebrations we want them to be…of life, and faith in all that is good in this world. The poem is moving and thought provoking…superb.

    1. Ron my friend, that’s my daily hope: the sight of so much good left to rejoice in…
And for the sake of all as such, I wish my memories, and my heart, my mind to be dumb, and blind and deaf…
But they aren’t, and I am more and more tired of being a mirror for the world’s suffering and pain, only…
But the bitter anger and furry against those taking advantage and thriving on the suffering innocents of this world, keeps me holding onto some strange call, I have never applied for…
Thank you for being a part of my little celebrations…

  4. Rom, you have made my day by this poem. I think man’s first mistake was to create gods, the second was to put in the mouths of the gods the idea that we should subdue the earth.
We have killed our kind, killed other animals and now we have put our continued existence in peril 😦

Glad you noticed my new alter-ego, you know who it is (without the pipe, of course)?

Two things either am bad with faces or I haven’t met the good old man. I may need education.
The above poem[ you only write poems] is superb and I like it. Even your responses are poetic 🙂

      3. I have just googled Emmanuel Goldstein, and I don’t know what comes to mind. I enjoyed 1984 when I read it and I can’t see you as an embodiment of Emmanuel and his dysfunctional government.
That notwithstanding, I like the avatar

    2. Dear Noel, It’s quite complicated to justify why EG…
As someone who has read 1984 many, many times, considering it actually the epitome of what has ever been written against double-think governments, I believe 1984 is the one valid political manifesto for an era leaving more space for pessimism than anything else. Goldstein is Orwell’s genius written in words. The essence of everything else he has ever written is coded into Goldstein’s misty character. Simplistically summed up though, Goldstein is Orwell, the tragic acknowledgment of what should have been, what should be, what is, what could be, and what will never be. Goldstein is every Matrix type government’s embodiment of its own nightmares, the reality of what they have done, the frustration of irreversibility, the core of everything they wanted not, extrapolated into a complicated object of hate, whose identity is of tantamount importance in order to give both hope and hopelessness to the already dumbed masses. Circus and bread, together.
Well, I know I haven’t made your life easier with this description of my choice, but hidden in it is the reason:-)
      And don’t forget the pipe:-)

      1. You dear friend are not friendly to my small brain. You give me very complex explanations and for that matter I think I need a complaints board.

Matters 1984 and Orwell, I must say I liked the guy. It is such a great book, especially looking at how information is dealt with between the government and the masses, in fact, not the government but the ruling elite. It is almost laughable except for the fact that it sad and almost true. I have looked at what we were taught in Primary school about the first president and compared that with what is fact. When someone looks at that and reads 1984, things make a lot of sense with regard to what information the ruling elite wants you to know.

I read Animal Farm and represented in several ways the political system I saw in my country then as now. Lately have been trying to get an essay about elephants that he wrote and so far my search has not been fruitful.

  6. Amen Ra!

    Beautifull poem…

Many people say the world is about to end, and some people wellcome that ending, because they are so beyond hope, the only hope they have, is that some superbeing will make it all better again.

I say this is the time we make our stand against the “free will” of those who would destroy the world for personal gain. If there is a god who actually is benevolent and caring, we make that god proud of us by saving the world, not by praising and expecting it to repair the damage humans have done. If this god is not interrested in our feeble attempts to save the planet, then to hell with him.

If there is no god to make proud by acting to save the planet, then we should act none the less. In that case we live our lives with clear conscience and leave a healthier legacy to the future generations.

    It is not easy though…
